Here's something that might surprise you:
Trauma isn't in the event that happens — it's how YOUR body responds to it. Your body might be ok and the same situation may cause mine to collapse from overwhelm.
When a stress response doesn't complete its full cycle, and return back to rest and digest, it’s often because that body is experiencing overwhelm. This is how trauma occurs. Trauma is simply energy that has nowhere to go. This static energy can start causing issues that show up as unhelpful behaviors, beliefs, and habits. Sometimes experiences that happen in early childhood lead to trauma. This is often called early developmental trauma as it happened in early development of our bodies.
Coping mechanisms (including addiction) temporarily soothes. But genuine self-care and tools that help the nervous system to release energy can help the body recover one bit at a time. Learning to listen to how and where the energy in the body needs to move, can creates more room for playfulness and even hope .
